Compassion is the basis of all morality

Arthur Schopenhauer a German philosopher once said: “Compassion is the basis of all morality.”

Shouldn’t we all remember this quote and live by it?

Arthur Schopenhauer was born on February 22, 1788 and died on September 21, 1860.

You will say, “Why are you talking about someone who lived such long time ago?”

Well, in these days we need to think more about compassion than we have ever before. Look at our world around us, wars, a financial crises, unemployment as well as deficit in most countries in this world are rising, the poor still are getting poorer and there is no sign in sight of a true end. In these times, Schopenhauer’s word should ring in our ears because many of these problems are related to the lack of morality!

Well, Schopenhauer analyzed the will which led him to the conclusion that emotional, physical, and sexual desires in us could never be fulfilled. Consequently, Schopenhauer favored a lifestyle of negating human desires, similar to the teachings of Buddhism and Vedanta.

If we would chose or favor his lifestyle, we surely would be happier and feel more content.
