Morality

Our decisions now  will impact our lives for years to come.

As President Barack Obama said,
‘‘When you pick up that ballot to vote, you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation.’’

After the the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 many Americans did not vote rational but emotional, giving President J.W. Bush and his party a free hand to pursue their agenda of war and tax cut for only the 1% of Americans who are the wealthiest in the United States. At the same time, the deregulation of the financial  sector ushered in the financial meltdown of 2008. And we are still dealing with the fallout of this biggest economic crisis since the 1930s as we speak. Do we really want to go back to or do we want to move forward?

President Barack Obama said,
‘‘ I will not let oil companies write this country’s energy plan, or endanger our coastlines, or collect another $4 billion in corporate welfare from our taxpayers.’’

All this made me think of a quotation from Immanuel Kant,
Morality is not the doctrine of how we may make ourselves happy, but how we may make ourselves worthy of happiness
